The Arrival

The Arrival by Shaun Tan was very unique and enjoyable to read it was almost like a looking at film reels of the black and white sort. I think with any story of immigration there is a natural draw to these stories for me.number one, my background is half Mexican-half polish so the feeling of xenophobia and being an immigrant is something I can relate to. The other thing is that people can understand what it feels like to be an outsider, and on some level they can connect with the stories. I think Shaun Tan's stories succeeded in getting people to think about being empathetic to immigrants rather than just assume they they are a problem.
This book lack of words remind of " snowman by Raymond Briggs which I used to read as a kid. and while there are other comics that don't use words either for some reasons this book instantly reminded me of the snowman which I had not thought about in years. when I looked up Shaun Tan's book I found that he had been inspired by the story.I think it brought in another level of familiarity to this book when I read it. I also think that if he had used words it would've elongated the story in a insignificant way that wouldn't really have added to the story in a emotional tone that the author wanted.Over all after reading this story if you want to look for ideas or inspirations for your own stories The Arrival" should be read if you want to bring something fresh to the industry.
